Dota is a series of advanced strategy video games published by Valve. The series began in 2003 with the release of Defense of the Ancients (DotA), an online multiplayer battle arena (MOBA) mod developed by fans for the video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, The Frozen Throne. The original mod features gameplay focused on two teams of up to five players taking over individual characters called "heroes," who must coordinate to destroy the enemy base structure called "Ancient" to win the game.

According to the steam tables of the data aggregator site, Dota 2 started in closed beta in July 2012, with around 50,000 concurrent players on average each month. Just five months later, that number jumped to just under 120,000, with the player base peaking at 213,000. The game was officially released and withdrawn from the beta phase in July 2013, just one month before the third iteration of The International.

TI3's runaway success and its incredibly close final match between fan favorite Natus Vincere and the Alliance's dominant force resulted in a huge explosion in the probability of the game. In August 2013, the number of players grew nearly 40 percent, with a peak of 520,000 simultaneous players in that month alone.
